How We Read It
Every chart on NatalChartRuler starts from the Swiss Ephemeris, the same astronomical engine used across professional astrology software. It is a compressed form of NASA’s JPL planetary data. Here is what that means in plain numbers.

The Swiss Ephemeris, maintained by Astrodienst, is built directly on the JPL DE431 ephemeris produced by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at NASA.[7] JPL data is the same source the Astronomical Almanac relies on for the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets.
The clever part is the compression. The full JPL file runs to roughly 2.8 gigabytes. Astrodienst squeezed it down to about 99 megabytes while staying faithful to the original to within one thousandth of an arc second.[7] For scale, one arc second is 1/3600th of a degree. A thousandth of that is far finer than any chart reading could ever require.
The time span is the other surprise. Because it is based on DE431, the engine can place a planet from 13000 BCE to nearly 17000 CE – roughly thirty thousand years.[7] So whether someone was born last spring or is curious about a date deep in antiquity, the position is computed, not guessed.

Accurate Down To The Arc Second
When the modern DE431 dataset is compared against the older DE406, the differences over a six-thousand-year window are tiny. The bars below show those differences for each body. Shorter is closer to identical – and almost all of them are a hair’s width apart.
